There’s No Place Like South Lake Tahoe for an Extended Winter Stay

Make a full month of memories with an extended-stay rental on the waterfront in South Lake Tahoe

Wintertime is magical at Lake Tahoe. The pristine jewel of an alpine lake becomes the centerpiece of a snow-covered wonderland. Mountain scenery that’s spectacular year-round is even more so when freshly frosted. World-class ski resorts beckon adventurous types to the slopes, and parents get to see their kids experience the joy of playing in the snow.

For the majority of Californians, this kind of wintry landscape is a rare treat worth driving to. You might stay for a long weekend or so, then leave the snow and mountains behind, returning to milder climates and lower elevations. But what if you were to stay a bit longer – maybe quite a bit longer? South Lake Tahoe, the biggest city on the lake, has moved in the direction of exclusive extended-stay rentals. Considerably lower nightly rates, ample availability and optimal locations in the city, including lakefront properties, are among the top incentives for extended stays in South Lake Tahoe this winter. Plus, you get to stay and enjoy this amazing destination for a whole month or more!

Reasons to Consider an Extended Stay in South Lake Tahoe

A 30-night vacation rental isn’t feasible for everyone, but the remote work revolution has given rise to the concept of “digital nomads.” If you’re working from home, why not make it a temporary home away from home on the shores of Lake Tahoe? If you love to ski, consider a ski lease for the winter. Schedule your Zoom calls for the afternoon, and hit the slopes in the mornings. Share a 30-night rental among a larger family or friend group, and you can accommodate a range of individual vacation schedules within that rental period.

Also consider the advantages of staying in a condo, cabin, townhouse or single-family home over a hotel room. For any stay longer than a night or two, a full kitchen, laundry and spacious accommodations are key. Digital nomads need excellent Wi-Fi, space to work and the quiet vibe offered by extended-stay rentals. Families with kids benefit from having everyone in a single unit, rather than separate rooms. Being able to stock a refrigerator and have access to a full kitchen’s worth of appliances and equipment means you can make your own meals, saving considerably compared to dining out or ordering in.

Peek Inside a Townhouse at Tahoe Keys

RnR Vacation Rentals are extended-stay and ski-rental specialists in South Lake Tahoe. Among their extensive portfolio of properties are more than a dozen 30- to 90-night rental homes available in the city. The company recently invited us to check out one of their most popular extended-stay rentals, the 3-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom Tahoe Marina Shores townhouse. The property is at Tahoe Keys, a private waterfront marina community at the southern tip of Lake Tahoe. Most homes here, including this one, come with a private boat dock, and this townhouse has uninterrupted views of the lake. It faces a channel where boats come and go, and overlooks a green space (or, white, in winter) with a beautiful mountain backdrop.

To maximize its unrivaled views, the home has full walls of windows in the open-plan living space downstairs, as well as the master bedroom upstairs. Imagine cozying up with a book by the sunken fireplace, or sitting back in one of the recliners with a hot drink, gazing out onto the snowy scene. Kids can build a snowman on the patio, and you might even use the outdoor grill for an apres-ski BBQ. Put the laundry room to good use tackling snow-sodden socks and mittens, and the kids will soon be back outside for more fun.

After sunset, pull down the insulating blinds and settle in for movies on the flat-screen TV, a game of cards at the play table, or a big family feast around the dining table. The full kitchen, recently remodeled, has every appliance and utensil you’d ever need for a 30-day or longer stay, including a supply of essentials like cooking oils and spices. Ample cleaning supplies are provided, too.

Upstairs at Tahoe Marina Shores is a huge master bedroom with en suite bathroom and its own flat-screen TV. The second bedroom features a queen bed, the third has two twins, and there’s another full bathroom between them (plus another half-bath downstairs.) The home is stocked with hotel-like toiletries in eco-friendly dispensers, along with plenty of towels, extra pillows and blankets.

If, by any chance, the exceptional recreational playground of Lake Tahoe isn’t calling, and the kids have used up all the snow around the townhouse for snowball fights and building snowmen, Tahoe Keys has a range of amenities to enjoy. These include an indoor swimming pool, hot tubs and private beach. During other seasons, you might be interested in the tennis courts, outdoor pool and playground. Boat owners may use a private boat slip in the marina.
